Is anyone breeding dogs that their size is around 18-19 or 19and a half at their tallest. Not trying to stir the pot or change anyones breeding concept, I prefer smaller dogs and wondered if anyone is trying to breed that direction or know of anyone who is?
Again, this is not a political question, not an association question...it is my question.........not meant to ruffle any feathers. One of these days I will be in the market for a small bitch and was just wondering.

At this time, I am not sure who might be using size as the most important consideration, although I would personally like to see more dogs on the smaller side... The females I get around are normally just about right... I would prefer the males to be smaller, but that is just me....

What breed of dog do any of you know that the males are as small as the females? I can't think of a one. In fact, most have a pretty good spread of height and weight between the two. But all that being said..I like my little girls..18 1/2" and 19"; 33 & 36 lbs

There are many instances of smaller males, and larger females in breeds which approach the same size. I merely stated that I would prefer males to be smaller than most of them are now... Even smaller females would not bother me either...

I may have stated things inappropriately, I like you Cliff prefer smaller dogs, I personally think they tend to be abit more athletic...thats just me and am sure there are exceptions to the rule.
I dont know if it would be a breeders preference to breed smaller or things just worked out that way, Im just curious if theres anyone out there.

Great topic !! I am working in that direction with my program or attempting too. . Sammy is 19 months and 19 inches 31 lbs . My males out of that litter are still a little taller than I like 20 inches to 21inches. When I breed Sammy it will be to a small red male that is 18.5 inches and 36 lbs . I have been looking for some time for a mate for her that was a really small male . Small females are kind of hard to find but small males are really hard to locate. I will be hoping to keep a red male if we get one ;D but will keep a blue if no reds are born . I have hopes of smaller males from that littler but we will see. Here is Sammy at 18 months the females out of here litter were just what I wanted to get from the breeding . The Males were all great dogs but a little bigger than I wanted .Here is a picture of Sammy at 18 months old ! i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/JWCAMO/SAMMY/SAMMYOCT2010004.jpg

Camo..Sammie is very nicely put together. Bella is too.
Clifford..I'd like to know which breeds you are talking about. Some time back I searched the listing of breeds..AKC, UKC and a abunch of independent type registries and just plain cur dog types. NONE of them had male and females the same size. Granted some were close..within 2-3 inches but I couldn't find one that was the same. So show me as I'd like to see what breed of dog(s) you are talking about. I want a male dog to look masculine; a female to look like girl.. I hear that Jimmy has a male that is under 19" Patch?? Not sure. But I am interested as to whether the smaller males are the runts of the litter and will this size breed true?

Ferrell, I think you are missing the point... You can easily find small males that are the same size as large females in any breed... And, in the smaller breeds there isn't as much size difference between sexes at all... I don't know about runts producing smaller progeny, but you can definitely breed for size. That is why there are so many sizes of Beagles...

We base size as a part of our breeding program. There are people breeding Lacys that would fit into the "large breed" breed standard. A Lacy is a MEDIUM sized dog. We choose our stud on several reasons, not listed in the order of choice. No. 1, working ability. No. 2, temperament. No. 3, breed standard. No. 4, compliment our bitch's faults. Chari is 18 inches and weighs 35 lbs. We bred her to Patch, who is 18 inches and weighs 38 lbs.

Donna, have you been able to follow your pups to see what size they are ending up? 18 to 18 you would think would produce about the same size but you never know whats exactly in the wood pile genetically speaking.
Ferrell......Im abit opposite of you in my thinking. I like males to have masculine heads but prefer females to have a more male type head than female. I realize females should have a girly type head and be more recessed but I just prefer abit more masculine head on them.

Camo, I would really like to see your next breeding, sounds like youve put alot of thought into it. Sammy is a Bella daughter isnt she, and if I remember correctly Bella is a Jimmy Brooks dog, just dont remember out of who.

Cliff, I'm not missing the point. Sure you can look around for the smallest males to breed to the smallest females. but a breed standard has a variation between the low and high end. Conformation, disposition and working ability should be #1. I'll be looking for a smaller male but that isn't what I'll be after primarily. i like a medium to lighter boned lacy dog also. Just my preference And please I'd like to know what breeds you are referencing. Beagles have several classes of sizes so that they are basically all covered.

Thanks Betty ! I see a lot of size and shape difference in the Lacy's . As far as the females go I see bigger and smaller. I have not seen a lot of what I would consider a small male . I see more bigger males . As far as the females go I do see a difference at least in the bay pen in how they work . My females are small but they are all over the place in the pen very quick and do use that to there advantage. Its a more of in your face to the hog I am quicker and you can't touch me type of attitude. But that does not make for a great bay pen dog . I have seen several bigger females that bay like my male and are built like my male . Patch is quick but doesn't use his speed much in the pen as was the same with the bigger females . I have not had the chance to see a smaller male work in the pen. When I say smaller I also mean the different look and build . I have only seen a few males with that look but have never had the chance to see them work hogs or cattle. My male is big and looks more hound and bays more like the cur dogs do . Also my small females can leap and jump up and over things like there not there like a cat . Patch either can't or wont jump. I prefer the bigger hound type for bay pen . That is until I have seen what the smaller males do in the pen. It is almost like there are 2 different breeds of Lacy's out there.

beagles are 13 inchs and under and 15 inches and under, usually makes are somewhat larger by an inch or 2.
smaller breeds dont seem to have much variance such as yorkies, the breed standard may say something but looking at the dogs theres not much of a difference.
To me the lacy is way to varied in size. At one time the standard went to 25 inches...thats not a medium size dog anyway you look at it. I havent read the standard in several months it may be down to 23 inches now...still is that a medium size dog? Personally I dont think so....to me around 20 is the tops in medium but that is my own opinion.
I didnt start this thread to hack anyone off, its like I said earlier thats my preference in dogs and was wondering if anyone shared that opinion and if there were folks actively breeding to achieve this. Dont get me wrong, I love the lively discussion topics like this bring on but my main intent was to know if anyone out there was breeding for a result more in the 18-19 inch height range.

Yes Sammy in Bella's pup and Bella is out Brooks dogs . Sammy's father is more like Patch . I think I got for the most part what I wanted out of the breeding . All of the dogs are doing very well at the homes and jobs they are in.
