Pain (without permanent injury) is a good teacher! We are now starting on mama cows with some big calves, hope they don't "school" the dogs too hard! (or me, cows are happy to trample and kick people too and some of these have done so) Dogs and cows are learning about each other at the same time. I guess wild pigs being so intelligent are a whole nother level.

I have seen dogs killed by deer , cows , donkeys , and hogs its all dangerous . I think you have to decide to breed your lines for what you want them to be used for , I think the all around dog thing is over rated . That is why hunters take dogs and cross them with other dogs is to get a better dog . So if you specialize in producing hard hunting lacy dogs for hog hunting. If you have done your home work with your breeding program and are putting out standing dogs on the ground. Hunters will not want to cross your dogs with other dogs they do not need too. I think anyone that works dogs and not just hog hunters will cross dogs up it is just the nature of some people Blood trailers do it as do cattle people . You just have no way of knowing what people will do when the dog has left your Kennels you just hope you have good judgement when you sell them .

You may have a point John..........It could be as simple as folks like to tinker with stuff. People buy new cars or trucks and start changing them, lifts, tires computer chips etc.......dogs are no different.

If it ain't broke...the Lacy brother did a fine job in my opinion...I like what I got. I try to sell to folks who like what they bought and don't want to change it.

Nothin' personal Blue Dog but when tinking with a living breathing animal like a dog or a horse is very different from a car or some kind of machine. With gene pools you could either dive into the deep end and swim to the top or hit your head on the shallow end and suffer the consequences.

It seems that Lacy pups are too expensive for the owners that like to cross dog breeds, they can get other cut breeds for half as much if they look.

Drats! I have wanted to cross a Chihuahua, and a Great Dane for years, to make Greathuahuas... They both come in black and white, so it ought to work!

I think I disagree with the tinkering theory. If I tinker with a vehicle I surely will screw it up and that could be considered the deep end if I do scores of damage, or not if I do minor damage. With animals the possibilities seem to be the same, one can do alot of damage or minor or maybe none.
I with you on I like my lacy dogs as they are and do not wish to cross them with another breed.

My preference is a pure bred lacy as well, but I am the owner of 2 lacy mixes and they are awesome dogs. It amazes me how much of the lacy (color and smarts) they do have. Again, I will only breed registered lacy/and registered lacy........but just wanted to say a lacy mix is a great dog. Would never encourage it, but glad I could help these guys out.

No offense but some of the best things in life came from tinkering. That includes the Lacy dog now I am not sure how much the Lacy brothers new about gene pool of there dogs .I can not answer that but I am pretty sure it was more tinkering than scientific they mixed there best working dog. Then they let nature cull the weak. So to make good dogs I would guess you have to dive in and hit your head every now and then. If not you are just treading water. I do not believe in cross breeding but that is not to say its wrong . It is not something I would do but I am glad the Lacy brothers choose to dive in deep in the shallow end and hit there heads every now and then. JMO

I guess I never thought about folks wanting to cross breed their dogs. Seems to me there are enough dog breeds out there that are already great at doing what they have been bred to do. My opinion is IF you want a better TRACKING DOG, spend more time TRACKING with it. If you want a better HOG DOG, spend more time baying hogs with it. If you want a better COON DOG, spend more time working Coons with it..

Wow what did I get myself into!
When I was doing research on the Blue Lacy, I liked the Idea of all the jobs the dog was capable of doing. A hog dog was one of them.
Despite the differences in the major organization they are proud of the breeds history. Being a hog dog is part of that history. Its mentioned on all the web sites.
Are they giving me the Texas two step ....
