I did not know that some people don't sell to hog hunters. I was given a blue female lacy that someone who did not understand how they were bred i think. She was so scared that the boy I got her from could not even handle her when she was tied out. she was terrified of anyone.
So he gave her to me to try and calm down and see if I could get her to hog hunt. I placed her in a pen and began to try and calm her. Not working. She was just too scared. I started leading her and she seemed to accept that better. I finally just turn her loose, living in the woods and not much traffic here. we have a lot of dogs loose and knowing that dogs learn better from other dogs about what the pack is supposed to do to be accepted in the pack. And the improvement is amazing. She is still sometimes hard to catch, but my grandkids run her down and she gives up and lets them win. She will let me catch her most of the time, but not always.
You may wonder what this has to do with the topic, so here it is. I try to carry my young dogs in the woods 4 to 5 times a week. Not hunting, but just being in the woods around the house. And she is totally different, Calm, assured, and easy to catch. I have been picking blackberries and she began to come to me after she would hunt for a while. and get her sugar high when i gave her blackberries. She watched me though and learned to get her own of the bush. She is at HOME in the woods. She is with her pack. Remember these dogs are coyote also and are not a domesticated dog like the breeds that have been crossed and bred from domesticated dogs for hundreds or thousands of years. They are different. They need more attention given to where they come from.
So I put "Spooky" in the bay pen. I won't explain what happened except she truly loves what she was bred for. No quit until she can't go anymore. And will climb into pen if you don't put her in. And WILL JUMP IN YOUR ARMS TO GET YOU TO PUT HER IN THE bay pen. sHE IS COMFORTABLE AND AT HOME! Any one can put her in the pen. She is a woods hog dog and will never be comfortable as someone's pet or a house dog. She shows where she is comfortable and assured. She ignores deer, coon, rabbits or anything else. She is hog dog. That is all she is interested in.
So I ask those who would condemn this to explain to me why I should not allow her to live a life that she was bred for and is only comfortable when she is allowed to do it? She may get hurt, she may get killed. But should I make her life miserable to her, deny what she truly loves and is only at ease when she is doing it to protect her from danger? I won't do that. Her life may be short, or long. But i will not deny her, sorry if some people don't understand.
I had two halve coyotes and were great dogs, I had a wolf/dog. They were great and loyal family members. But they were not true dogs as most people think. And to me a Lacy is not a true dog either.
I may offend some Lacy owners, but to me, to me to try to protect your Lacy from everything that could hurt them, keep them constantly penned, or kept in a small home is a worse life than doing what they love to do, even if there is a risk involved. I will try to get more Lacys to hunt hogs with. I will vest them and use cut collars to protect them. I will exercise them and help them be ready when they do face a 300 pound hog with bad cutters. But they will be at HOME AND HAPPY! Thanks, sorry for the rambling, but I think people should know that because you have a dog with coyote bred in, that you may need to look at what gives some Lacys an enjoyable life, instead of what you think they should enjoy.
