Well, as the dust begins to settle, it appears that no organized group will require OFA certification for breeder Lacys, allowing each breeder to determine what is best for their breeding program.

I can understand that. I can't understand why a breed wide study hasn't been offered.

Scott, I believe (IMO) that the reason you will not see a breed wide study is that these groups (Individuals within) do not like each other and therefore will not work with each other. The past is too deep seeded that I believe nothing will bring them together. I think that overall most of the lacy world will get along and have many common interests but some of those at the top or with (political leverage) will not concede their perceived power as it were to what they consider to be the other side.

There have been many efforts trying to put up the big tent, but someone always goes in and knocks down the center pole! From all appearances, they must not want it!

The circus analogy fits better than anything else, which makes one wonder, why so many clowns?

I have been looking at other working dog organizations/clubs and it is pretty much the same thing. Working Kelpie Council, Australian Shepherd Club of America, Border Collie Club... they all "strongly" recommend testing parents for inherited diseases and getting OFA but in the end their take-home message is BUYER BEWARE. Still sucks, though.
I gotta go look at hunting dog organizations/clubs.
I told my herding instructor, a border collie man about the incident. He shrugged his shoulders and his one-word answer was "So?" Border collies are line-bred and so closely related they can be prone to all kinds of stuff, but the working lines are culled and such problems are swept under the rug.

Scott ...their not, its that simple and that straight forward, their not.
Bkeeper, Good information, Thats the way it was back in the 70s with ASCA before their split. Its always been buyer beware and they always put forth the idea of responsible breeding ....
Its always been my contention that buyers will bring forth the faults of the breed and as a rule the breeders will not. Its business suicide for them and their breeding program, so there you have it.

In the border collie world, it is all about the bloodlines. What the big guys do is import working dogs and breed them. The pups can go for $500 or more just based on blood lines. A started pup is worth more, will go for $3000 or so. A trainer will buy a started one and train it some more and sell it for $6000 or so. If it competes in trials and wins a lot it can go for $10,000 or more. Then the puppy breeding begins. No health screening.

Ive seen the price sky rocket in Austrailian Shepherds as well. When a dog is initially sold as a pup purely off his bloodlines then shoot up depending on training and performance in the working arena.
They wernt importing back then but the same idea was happening.
Ive heard about the border collie wars, I need to read the book.

Folks who get their dogs screened should adjust their pup prices... The stupid ones might not do it though!
