I have been working with Jackson some on Tracking. They are going to be 11 weeks on Friday. Today he seems that he has finally put it together on a short trail. If I follow that stuff their should be something good at the end. He stayed on course and showed more focus today than he has in the past.

Yea, it is only 25 feet. We used deer blood from frozen meat that has been thawed about 15cc is what I used and that was more than likely too much.

I am also going off his recommendation to train on lead and I think it is good for several reasons. 1. You can help coach your dog along. 2. I have noticed that when he sees the long tracking lead. I tell him it is time to go to work, It is time to find the deer. He is starting to put this together.

I kept the blood from some backstrap I cooked last night and have a fresh liver in the fridge at the camp. Plan to get started this weekend.

That's perfect. The consistency of the beef liver that I have been using from the store has not been good for me. When I try to thaw it just turns into slop. So I think your fresh liver will be great. What he really like that I had to quit using was the rabbit hide. He acted like he wanted to eat the entire thing and it wasn't so big so it made me nervous so I had to toss it. At one point he had half of the thing down his throat already. My uncle has a deer hide that I am going to move toward.

I learned a lesson this weekend. The next time I decide to cut a piece of hide from a deer to leave at the end of the blood trail I best make it big enough that it can't be swallowed Rowdy did ok for his second run. The first was in the front yard. The second was at camp with good liver blood, a chunk of liver and hide at the end. Well guess what he sucked down the liver and moved on to the hide. I grabbed the last inch sticking out of his mouth and payed for it. He let go to get a better bite and drew blood on me when he did. He went nuts over that hide. I can stick my hand in his food bowl without problems. I was glad to see him excited over it but ouch.

Yea. I was using the rabbit hide and had to stop because he loved it and was trying actually eat it. I cut my deer ones much larger and will still watch him.

They get pretty fired up when they get that blood smell going, and will gobble up as much deer stuff as they can get in their mouths. Nothing is safe, so watch them closely! And, don't be surprised if they stop on a real trail to sample the nuggets the deer leaves behind! That makes the part about praising them after a find a little bit tough, because they usually reciprocate with big sloppy kisses, if you get close enough!

I know what you mean Clifford. I went to check a cam Sunday and had Rowdy on the golf cart. I let him run around while I was checking the pics and the next thing I knew he was sucking up deer turds like M&M's. I couldn't help it. I just had to let the old lady get some sugars from him when we got home before telling the story ;D

How did that go over? Pretty funny. Same thing here eating raw liver and chewing on deer hide.
