This would be fine for the first or second time you expose your dog to tracking. It's the same thing as using a liver drag, and a great tool for getting a pup's instinct to trail using his nose started. But, you don't want to continue laying a solid trail, because the dog needs to learn that there will be spaces between the blood spatters, and he needs to search for the next spot.
Take a plastic coke bottle and drill a small hole in the lid, so that you can either throw it ahead of your, flipping end over end, or just use it to drip a little blood out and then move on. The length of the spaces can be extended as your pup starts to understand that he is going to have to search to follow the track.
