I was never properly introduced to Cynthia and James, though I had been around them at the May 2009 Lacy Fun Day. After that, I became active on the forum, and had the opportunity to read Lacy stories from fellow TLDGA/LDGR members. One of the folks telling stories just happened to be Cynthia. I paid close attention to her experiences with Lacys and other breeds, and I was impressed with her stories as well as her general knowledge about dogs. At that time, I never thought that we would become friends, or that I would ever get a puppy from her.
Cynthia had read on my site, www.mslacydog.com, as well as the TLDGA forum that my husband and I would be looking for a new female puppy at the start of 2010. And, as we began our search, Cynthia gave me information on Lacy pups that could possibly work with our stud dog, Jones. I began talking to her more frequently, as time passed, asking questions and listening intently as she answered in language that I could understand.
During my search for a new puppy Cynthia began planning a breeding at Podunk Heaven, and didn’t give this information to me. But, someone else did! So, I contacted her to find out more about it. I contacted Marlo, and found that a pup from Cynthia would work with my program. Then, I called the hubby, who was working in Illinois, and he agreed to find out more. I was excited!
Everything checked out, and hurray, hurray puppies were on the way! We put in for a blue female, and the waiting began. Clifford and I started talking about our new pup every day, since we were so sure that at least one had to be a female. How would Jazz and Jones react? What would the new pup look like? Who would she like more? It was a constant topic at our house for weeks!
We counted the days until Stormy’s delivery. And, the tale of that delivery only made me respect Cynthia and James more. They assisted with Stormy's emergency C-Section, and worked with each pup as it came into this world. Stormy did well, and all the puppies made it except the one that had caused the problem. Out of the six puppies born that night, one was a girl. Oh my! We had our pup!
I waited until the five week mark to find out Cynthia's thoughts. She knew what kind of dog I was looking for, and when she gave her blessing, we started planning our trip to pick her up. Waiting for the pups to age from five weeks to eight weeks was hard, and the closer it got to Valentine’s Day the more excited I became. Noon on Thursday, February 11th couldn’t get here fast enough! But, finally the magic day arrived, and Clifford, I, Jazz, and Jones traveled to Louise, TX to pick up our new girl!
At this point, I didn’t know who I would be happier to meet, the new puppy or Cynthia. You see, through all of my conversations with Cynthia and James, I found out that we had much in common, and we had become friends. Our little group traveled nine hours through lots and lots of rain and wind, but we finally made it! And, this is where the fun really began!
I got to see Cynthia and James face to face, met all the puppies, and the other Lacys, and loved every one of them. It was hard telling the pups apart at first, since they all looked alike. But, over the next three days, I managed to get them sorted out, and notice their differences.
I also got a good dose of all the work involved with a new litter. Take all the puppies outside. Feed them, and let them play. Clean the whelping box. Put puppies up. Let the big dogs out, and feed them. All before Cyn went to work. James cooked an awesome breakfast! But, I can’t tell you the ingredients, because he might kill me! LOL!
Cynthia came home early, so we had lots and lots of time for visiting along with lots and lots of playing with puppies and big dogs!
Our fellas went on an overnight hog hunt! Fun! We got even more time to talk, and do everything we wanted to do, and nothing that we didn't! Maybe this truly was Podunk Heaven!
Let me tell you a few other things I experienced on the trip. Coyotes howled at night, giving me chill bumps. It seemed to me that there must have been 20 or so. James said only four or five. Owls hooted, first thing in the morning, something I've rarely experienced. A real cowboy worked cows with his two cur dogs. He even used a rope. Wow! The cool thing was that his girlfriend was tough too! Beautiful and tough! That’s a real lady to me!
I witnessed James and Cyn feeding the mustangs, and enjoyed watching James with the horses. I even got to pet two of them. Awesome!
Then, there was a rainbow! So beautiful! The sun peeping over the clouds early in the morn! A new born calf arrived as we watched from the road! Breathtaking!
Podunk Heaven Ranch is all that it’s name suggests, and needs no explanation! It’s far enough out in the country that only a few trucks pass. So, you know everyone of them and where they’re going. And, it’s definitely God’s country and a little piece of heaven!
I am so glad I went, and I’m sure looking forward to my return, with my blue girl this summer!
