What would make a 2 foot tall tomato plant vanish?

I am so P. O.'d! I have some tomato plants in cages around the perimeter of the garden. Some varmint is eating every plant I put in one particular spot. I had one plant disappear and I put out a trap and caught a rat. I replaced the plant with an even bigger one and now it has disappeared too. Leaves, stem, all are gone so I don't think it is cut worms.

I have now put out a larger trap.
