Pearl is my first hunting dog. My brown turkey figs are just coming in, so that means that every night I will have at least a possum or a coon if not a grey fox in the trees munching figs.
Pearl is doing a wonderful job of baying them! I can hear her in the house. But when I go outside to look, she stops baying. Is that normal? I guess she is thinking, well I did my job, now you do yours! I need a new spotlight.

OK here is another dumb question. When I am not hurrying fast enough to suit Pearl, she gives me a firm poke in the calf muscle with her nose. I have only known blue heelers to do this! Do other Lacys do this?

Well we now have a routine! I let Pearl out after dark, she bays in one of the 2 giant fig trees. I get the flashlight and look for the critter and praise her. Then we go inside. Still haven't seen the critter. If it was a possum it would just sit on a limb and hiss, so I think it is a coon. I will have to shoot it for her!

Bella will push and nudge us all the time if you are doing what she wants . Also they should bay till you find the critter it . If this is something new that has started she may be distracted when you go out. Try to incourage pearl to get back on what she was baying til you find it and eventually shoot it .

She stays focused and runs around and around the fig tree with her head up, growling, but I will definitely egg her on and get her barking. Clifford those fig trees are taking over. Every place a limb touches the ground it roots, so soon (well, in 10 years) you have a big sprawling mess. I am going to trim them down with a chain saw while they are dormant. And if you guys want one and we run in to each other this winter I will be happy to sever a baby and dig it up for you to replant. They sure are yummy!
