Gabe, Here are the updated guidelines put out by the Animal Hospital Association. healthypets.mercola.com/sites/he ... lines.aspx I don't agree with all that is stated in this article, but if you are going to vaccinate your dog, this is a better way to go than a lot of other ways. Betty

Gabe,
I have one dog that was vaccinated to the hilt, Lucy. She will never be vaccinated again. Larry received his puppy shots from the breeder and when he was well over a year old, I had him vaccinated for rabies. Abe has only had the rabies vaccination. They will only get the one rabies vaccine, no more. If I had a choice, or if I had a different breed of dog, I would not vaccinate for rabies, regardless of the law.
To vaccinate or not is something that each person has to decide for themselves. Vaccines can and do cause damage to the dog. That is well known and publicized. There are serious diseases that are caused by the vaccines and the vet schools know it and teach it. The thing that one must understand is that many of the booster shots that the vets give are unnecessary and nothing more than a way to transfer money from your pocket to theirs.
I have had pups that were vaccinated for Parvo and got Parvo from the shot. I have Abe, who never was vaccinated for Parvo, who got Parvo at 8 months. He was not very sick with it and got over it by himself. (And, I did take him to the vet) Parvo and Distemper are puppy diseases. If you think that you need to protect your pup from those diseases, then by all means, so it. But, after the pup is grown, they dont need Parvo and Distemper vaccine boosters. Parvo is a deadly disease, but one must understand that it is not the disease that the pup dies from, it is dehydration. Whether your pup is vaccinated for Parvo or not, you need to know the symptoms of Parvo as many, many vaccinated pups die from Parvo. In most cases, the dehydration can be reversed if the pup is treated fast enough.
I could go on and on, but what I want you to understand is that you need to research the options and make a decision based on what you know, not what someone tells you is needed. I have not gotten to where I am quickly- it has taken years for me to get to where I am now. Don't make a decision on what I say, as that is not right either.
Some of the diseases that dogs are vaccinated for are scary things, others are just colds. Rabies is required by law. In most Texas counties it is required every 3 years. The rabies vaccine has been proven to be effective for 3 years, so there is no need to vaccinate every year. I dont know what the law is in other states.

This is an interesting topic in which I have never really thought about. I have always heard the controversy about vaccines and children, but never thought about it in dogs. I will definitely do some more research on the topic now.

In New York they force you to get 3 years of Rabies shots.
1st one is a dead virus 2nd year is a booster 3rd year you can get the 3 year shot.
The drug companies own the politicians here.

IMO, there's nothing worse than a vet that pushes booster shots. The vet schools are teaching less shots, the vets should keep up with what the schools are teaching. And, the drug companies own all politicians!! Vaccines are money makers for humans and pets. The dangers are completely ignored and in dogs, like I have said before, the dangers are known and taught in vet schools.
The thing that everyone should know if you do vaccinate is that dogs do have reactions to vaccines and it can be any vaccine. Watch your dog after getting a vaccine and if it acts different in any situation, contact the vet. Some reactions will be a knot at the injections sight. Some will be the dog having breathing trouble, anything like that can be a reaction. Even if your dog doesnt have immediate reactions, there are still diseases caused by vaccines and they are bad diseases. I have a friend whose dog has a blood disease that is known to be caused by vaccines. She has spent a fortune on that dog and the dog has suffered. If your dog gets a knot after a vaccine, that dog should never be vaccinated again. They now vaccinate cats in the legs for certain vaccines so that if the cat gets cancer at the vaccine spot, they can just cut the leg off. There is a place to report vaccine reactions, and it is important to report anything that is a reaction.
Also, you never vaccinate a sick animal. It states on the label of the vaccine that you never vaccinate a sick animal. Never let your vet talk you into it, no matter what. If the label says not to do it, the label means it. If your vet insists on vaccinating a sick animal, take the animal and walk out the door. Find a new vet.
