Well as everyone knows Sniper is our first blood tracking dog. So there is a lot of learning going on for him and us.. We have had him track both of his deer on the 30' lead. But Im thinking the lead is causing more problems than it is solving. When he tries to circle or loop he gets it wrapped around trees and corn stalks. When hes off and running we end up holding him back and he takes this as us wanting him to stop.. Sniper is so good at finding the deer that Im wondering what the more experienced trackers think of us letting him just wing it on his own off lead.. Ive had a few friends suggest some collars that BEEP when he stops moving and some collars that FLASH really bright so we can locate him in the dark.. He has stopped 10 feet from both deer he has found and just sat down looking at it. So Im thinking maybe that collar that beeps when he stops wouldnt be a bad idea. Im looking for some feed back so shoot your opinions to me..

I plan on keeping Jackson on lead this full year. The main reason is that I don't want him tracking too fast, but I also don't want him to jump and chase healthy game wild hog or deer. If he gets distracted I can just give him some support. I use about a 20 foot line with no knot or end and just drop it and pick it up at untangled spots. It does get tangled up in the thick stuff some but it works out. I don't think you would be going wrong going off lead just kind of what I put together from the book.

You could look at using something like the Garmin Astro. I broke down and bought one and love it. I haven't been in a situation yet where Rowdy got far enough away to actually need it but I'm sure it's coming. I've been using the GPS itself for hunting. I've never used one before now that you could upload satelite images to. I've got topo and satelite maps for all the places I hunt on it and I can see where this is going to be a big advantage in scouting. I shopped around a few weeks and the cheapest place I could find them is www.custom-collars.com/garmin-astro-320-combo-with-dc40-collar-p-253.html

I use a bell on a tracking collar. When you no longer hear the bell or it is barely making any noise the dog is at the deer. This works pretty well and its cheap.
That said I also want a Garmin.

+1 on the bell. I watched a guy work a seasoned lab on a trail for a good buck a guy shot at the camp and he ran a garmin on him and wouldn't put his bell on the dog until he knew for sure the dog was on the trail . The dog looked at the bell as his reward. This lab has found 300+ deer. We didn't find this one but it was fun to watch him work.
